Stewart Robson hopes Jack Wilshere can get back to his best form at West Ham, after hailing the midfielder as ‘the best talent I’d seen from an English player since Paul Gascoigne’.
The England international left the Gunners after 17 years to move across London to play for Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham side upon the expiration of his contract.
Despite new boss Unai Emery failing to guarantee Wilshere the play time he so desired, the new Hammers boss wants the 26-year-old to be the star of his midfield.
Robson, who struggled with injury problems at West Ham and the Gunners, has admitted he hopes the talented midfielder can get back to his best and put his own injury demons in the past.
He told Jim White on talkSPORT: “He’s somebody that goes past you with the ball, even if it’s only five or ten yards when he initially breaks the challenge, that enables you to see the next pas –that through ball.
“And that’s what Jack Wilshere has got to get back to doing.
“He had 38 games for Arsenal last season; there was a period of about 12 where he looked to be back to his very best.
“And everyone was saying; ‘Can he get in the England squad?’
“I’m glad he didn’t go with England, I think it would have been a step too far for him just at the moment.
“I want to see him back to where he was four or five years ago where he was the best talent I’d seen from an English player since Paul Gascoigne.”
Wilshere will don the Claret and Blue once again on Wednesday evening as the Hammers face Aston Villa in a friendly game.
After that, they face three more non-competitive fixtures before starting their Premier League season on August 12 at Anfield against Liverpool.
